In the 1980s, Sheffield rockers Def Leppard reigned supreme, stomping all over the opposition with monster hit albums such as High 'n' Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria. In recent years, however, the Lep has lost its growl, and its strident, hi-voltage pop-metal style sounds as dated as a Pac-man game. Never ones to give up easily - they didn't quit when drummer Rick Allen lost an arm, or when guitarist Steve Clark died after a drink and drugs binge - Def Leppard are currently prowling the tour circuit in support of their new album, Euphoria, and arrive at the Olympia on Wednesday. It's a far cry from their massive stadium shows of a decade ago, when the group would play in the round and dazzle the fans with explosive pyrotechnics. Wednesday's show will be a scaled-down affair, but though there's no doubt they can rock without the aid of blinding lights, some might say that the Deffies' true strength lay in their spectacular ability to use their illusion.
