LONDON - Britain's opposition Labour Party easily won a by election yesterday for the European Parliament seat of Merseyside West, although turnout was the lowest for a British election in over 50 years, official results showed.
Only 11.4 per cent of the constituency's 515,549 voters cast their ballots on Thursday, reflecting traditional apathy towards what is widely regarded as an irrelevant body.
As expected, Labour's Mr Richard Corbett won the northwest England seat, gaining 31,484 votes. Conservative Mr Jeremy Myers followed with 12,780 while Liberal Democrat Mr Kiron John Cuchulain Reid trailed in third place with 8,829.
