A memorial service for relatives of the thousands of victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center took place in New York today under a clear blue sky.
Mourners filled 5,000 seats stretching for three blocks of Church Street in full view of Ground Zero - the still smoking remains of the 110-story twin towers.
Thousands more mourners thronged the adjoining streets as Daniel Rodriguez of the New York Police Department opened the ceremony by singing the US national anthem.
The vast majority of World Trade Center victims remain entombed beneath tons of steel and concrete. Only 465 bodies have so far been identified from among 519 pulled from the ruins, and 4,136 victims are still listed as missing.
