THE insurers and owners of the Bahamian registered cargo vessel, Tomfield, which ran aground at the entrance to Cork Harbour last week, will meet today to decide on the next move in the salvage operation.

Over the weekend, a team from Cork Harbour Commissioners made the vessel fast on the rocks beneath Roche's Point Lighthouse, using anchors and land lines to prevents it moving and obstructing the busy shipping lane.

A port spokesman said yesterday that there was no question of the owners or insurers abandoning the 1,400 tonne Tomfield, and added that under international and Irish law, there was a requirement that the vessel should be removed and the operation paid for by the owners.

The Tomfield was blown on to the Cow and Calf Rocks in last week's heavy gales, but was travelling light at the time. Its crew of six was airlifted to safety.
