Two volunteers with almost 100 years' service have been honoured with special medals by the Rome headquarters of the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps. They are Commander James Turner, who has 50 years' service, and Capt Joe Tynan, who has 45 years' service with the Order's unit in Thurles, Co Tipperary.

The Thurles unit marked its 50th anniversary at the annual national assembly of the Order in the town yesterday. Former Government minister Mr Michael Lowry TD, and Archbishop Dermot Clifford were among those who paid tribute to the community work of the Order.
