Co Meath is not a dumping ground for Dublin's waste, the Progressive Democrats' candidate in the constituency, Mr Ronnie Owens, has said. The PDs in government would ensure a radical new waste management strategy is put in place, he added.
Meath had suffered greatly by being used as a convenient dumping ground for the waste generated by Dublin's development. "We must change direction away from landfill as our primary method of waste disposal. This country just cannot sustain the current system whereby all waste is collected from households and delivered directly to landfills."
In the long term, he added, there has to be a move to waste reduction, recycling and reuse.
