Maze escaper Jimmy Smyth was not entitled to any allowance for time in custody in the US while fighting extradition, a judge ruled in the High Court in Belfast yesterday.
Smyth has been released since his case was heard in September 1998, but yesterday's reserved decision by Mr Justice Kerr could have a bearing on other cases. Smyth had applied for a judicial review of the decision not to reduce his sentence by the four years he was in custody in the US.
