Matt Molloy has been named Traditional Musician of the Year in the TG4 National Traditional Music Awards 1999.
He was presented with his award by the broadcaster, Ciaran MacMathuna, at Chief O'Neill's Hotel in Dublin last night. The citation for the award said Mr Molloy had an "inimitable" understanding of musical tradition.
A native of Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, Mr Molloy has played with The Bothy Band, Planxty and The Chieftains.
Aogan Lynch was named Young Musician of the Year. Mr Lynch was born in Cork in 1975 to a family with "a strong tradition of music and song".
