Solidarity with the people of Belgium was expressed by Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin at a Mass last night for the victims of the recent bus crash in Switzerland. The ceremony in support of the families of the victims of the crash was organised by the Belgian embassy in Dublin.
Six adults and 22 children died in the crash, as they were returning home from a ski trip to Swiss Alps.
Ambassador Robert Devriese and members of the Belgian community attended the Mass at Donnybrook church.
“We remember the children who died, with our only consolation being that the very innocence of their lives will ensure for them a special place with the Lord,” Dr Martin said in his homily.
The pain of the parents must be “immeasurable” he said. The deaths of “innocent children stunned us all” and called “all of us to step back” to “reflect on the mysteries of life”.
There were no explanations and the closest thing to consolation was “to reflect on the vital place of innocence and goodness and hope in life”.
