Manchester United said it will restructure its merchandising operation and shift the current structure to a licensing business following a review.
It said this will give the club the opportunity to seek specialist partners in products and marketing worldwide and is part of its longer-term strategy to develop its commercial activities on a world basis.
The impact of the proposed changes will result in 48 positions in merchandising being withdrawn over the next 12 months, leaving a staff of over 50 people in the reorganised operation based at Old Trafford.
The club's retail business is unaffected by these changes.
