A MAN has escaped a second attempt on his life following a drive-by shooting in Limerick.
The 27 year old, who was injured in a shooting near Thomond Park rugby stadium last January, was targeted again on Monday night in Cathedral Place in the city centre.
A gunman travelling in a bogus taxi fired at least one shot from the vehicle at about 11pm, but missed his target.
Gardaí believe that a taxi sign stolen in the last few days, was placed on top of the vehicle to make it look like a genuine taxi.
The intended target suffered pellet shot wounds to his head and upper body when he was ambushed while sitting in a car on January 22nd last. The shooting took place in the Shanabooley Road area of Ballynanty as thousands of rugby fans were leaving the nearby Thomond Park Rugby Stadium following the Munster – Northampton match.
Originally from the St Mary’s Park area of Limerick, the 27-year-old was released from prison shortly before the January shooting and had moved to the Moyross area of the city.
There was a number of people travelling in the car used in Monday night’s shooting. The vehicle, a blue Corolla sped off in the direction of Pennywell afterwards and was later found burned out in the Patrickswell area of Co Limerick.
Gardaí arrested three youths aged from 17 to their early 20s yesterday afternoon in connection with the shooting. The three suspects were being held for questioning last night.
