A MAN remains in a critical condition in hospital after he was kicked and beaten in a public park at the weekend.

The 22-year-old Dubliner was attacked on the edge of Fairview Park at Marino Mart on the northside of the city. The incident occurred at 3.30am on Sunday.

There was a large number of young people in the area at the time who were making their way home after a night out.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital, where he is still seriously ill. The scene of the beating was sealed off for most of Sunday as members of the Garda Technical Bureau carried out an examination.

Garda sources said the victim sustained kicks and punches to the head and body. Detectives do not believe any weapons were used and are working on the theory that the attack was opportunistic.

Gardaí have appealed for anybody who was in the area at about the time of the attack to contact them. They are particularly interested in hearing from young people who may have been socialising in the area on Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday.

They believe the attackers may have been in the Barcode Club at the Westwood gym beside Fairview Park and have urged anybody who was in the club on Saturday night to come forward.

They have also appealed for any taxi drivers who may have witnessed the attack or driven people from the area to contact them.

Clontarf Garda station can be contacted at 01-6664800.
