An unemployed man was remanded in custody yesterday on charges arising from the seizure by gardai of cannabis resin worth £50,000 in Cork earlier this week.
Edward Landy (33), with an address at the Manse, Wellington Street, Clonmel, was charged with possessing cannabis, possessing cannabis resin for sale or supply and possessing more than £10,000 worth of cannabis for sale or supply in Cork on March 21st.
Gardai objected to bail for the defendant, saying they feared he would abscond because of the likely severe sentence he would receive if convicted. They also objected to bail on the grounds of an alleged attempt by Mr Landy to evade arrest.
Det Insp Tony Quilter said Mr Landy was a passenger in a van driven by his brother Patrick (38), and he alleged that they had rammed a Garda car and that they were apprehended only because their van crashed into a taxi.
Judge Leo Malone refused bail and remanded the defendant in custody to appear again at Cork District Court next Monday.
Judge Uinsinn Mac Gruairc had refused bail to Mr Patrick Landy, of Elm Park, Clonmel, at a special sitting of Cork District Court on Thursday night.
