A man who plunged a five-inch knife into the head of a woman from Northern Ireland while she travelled on a train in London last year was sent to a psychiatric hospital for an unlimited period at the Old Bailey yesterday, writes Rachel Donnelly from London.

Robert Buckland (18) was convicted earlier this year of attempting to murder Ms Alison Kennedy, from Killaloo, Co Derry, while she was travelling to Surrey. A legal technicality prevented Mr Justice Geoffrey Grigson from sending Buckland to prison for life, which he admitted he had wanted to do, and instead he was sent to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital.
