A 26-year-old man has been found guilty by a jury at the Central Criminal Court of raping a Waterford student in the early hours of the morning while she walked home alone from a disco last November.

Philip Redmond with addresses at William Street and Birchwood Court, Waterford, had been living there for about a month following his release after serving a prison sentence in England. He formerly lived in Birmingham.

Redmond was found guilty on four charges of rape, and one each of aggravated sexual assault, threatening to kill the student and robbing her mobile phone on November 8th, 2006.

The guilty verdicts were unanimous and were returned following three hours and 41 minutes deliberation. The jury of four women and eight men failed to return a verdict on one charge of attempted anal rape.

Mr Justice Barry White remanded Redmond in custody for sentence later and certified him for registration as a sex offender. He also directed the pre-paration of a victim impact report.

Mr Justice White also thanked the jurors for their care and attention to the case and exempted them from further jury service for 10 years if they wished to avail of that exemption.
