A Co Cavan man appeared at Monaghan District Court yesterday charged with murdering his mother last Saturday at her home near Cootehill.
Mr Anthony Lynch (26), with an address at Drumbarkey, was remanded in custody to a sitting of the Dublin Metropolitan Court next Tuesday.
Mrs Sheila Lynch (47) was found dead in a bed at her home on Saturday evening.
Supt Liam Ward, prosecuting, told Judge Donal McArdle that Mr Lynch was arrested at the psychiatric unit of Cavan General Hospital on Sunday.
He was charged with murdering his mother on Monday evening and made no reply to the charge, the garda said.
A lawyer for Mr Lynch requested that his client undergo a psychiatric assessment while in custody.
The judge granted the application and ordered free legal aid.
Mr Lynch had to be forcibly removed from the courtroom by gardai after his remand.
