A man is in critical condition in hospital today after he was shot in the head in Tallaght early this morning.

The 27-year-old suffered a single gunshot wound to the head at an apartment in Russell Rise, off Fortunestown Way, just after 6.30am.

The man, originally from Castlelawns in Tallaght, was staying in the apartment with his girlfriend and two children when the shooting happened. He was shot after looking out the window of the third-floor apartment when the doorbell rang.

Forensic teams were at the scene to examine the building and surrounding area and door-to-door inquiries were carried out by officers in the locality.

Superintendent Eamon Dolan appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

“People may have seen something going to work or coming from work at that time of the morning,” he said.

“They may have seen something of a suspicious nature, like people running in the area or maybe a vehicle driving away quickly or being abandoned locally.”

The man’s family have remained at his bedside at Tallaght Hospital, where he is described as being critical but stable in the intensive care unit.

A large garda presence was at the scene throughout the day as detectives attempted to piece together a motive for the attack.

Teams of gardaí combed the area as it was cordoned-off for a full forensic examination. Local residents were quizzed by detectives.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact Tallaght Garda station (6666000) or the Garda Confidential Line (1800-666111).

The shooting follows the death of Gavin McCarthy (24), who was Ireland’s 14th gun murder victim of the year. He was fatally shot in Dublin’s north inner city on Sunday night on Sheriff Street.

It is believed a teenaged gunman, who was caught at the scene by the victim’s brother but managed to get away, carried out the Sherriff Street shooting. He cycled up to Mr McCarthy (21), of Oriel Street, Dublin 1, outside a fast food outlet on Sheriff Street and fired a number of shots at him with a handgun. Mr McCarthy was hit twice, in the face and leg.
