THE man arrested over the stabbing of Paul Boyle (19) on Arranmore Island, Co Donegal, is expected to be released from hospital shortly.

The man, aged 39, was arrested following an incident on Saturday night when Mr Boyle sustained critical injuries after he was stabbed in the neck with a broken glass in a pub on the island.

He died later in Letterkenny General Hospital.

The suspect was brought from Glenties Garda station to Letterkenny General Hospital to receive treatment on Sunday after he complained of illness.

The period of his detention will begin again on his release.

Yesterday, gardaí appealed for anyone who has information on the incident on Saturday to contact them. A Garda investigation has been launched.

Meanwhile, islanders turned out in large numbers for the removal of Mr Boyle at Letterkenny General Hospital yesterday.

More than 200 people, mostly islanders, attended the removal as Fr John Joe Duffy prayed for Mr Boyle and his family.

His funeral takes place after 11am Mass tomorrow at St Crone’s Church.

He will be buried in the nearby island graveyard.
