A CONNEMARA man has been remanded in custody in connection with a high-speed 50-mile car chase through Connemara, which allegedly endangered a garda’s life.
Ciarán Mulkerrins (21), Callaghgualaim, Lettermullen, is charged with dangerous driving at Tír an Fhia, Lettermullen on Monday. He is further charged with three counts of dangerous driving at Doir Fheartha Beag, Carraroe; Casla; and Leitir Mór.
Sgt Ronan Mahon of Carraroe Garda station gave evidence at Galway District Court of arresting and charging Mr Mulkerrins at 2.45pm with the four dangerous driving offences. Insp Seán Glynn applied to the court to have the accused remanded in custody. He said the charges before the court were very, very serious.
Sgt Mahon said it was alleged that a high-speed chase which continued for 45 minutes had involved an alleged 21 instances of dangerous driving. Insp Glynn said it would be alleged also that there was a garda on the road at one point to stop a vehicle and his life had been put in danger.
Judge Mary Fahy appointed solicitor Valerie Corcoran under the Free Legal Aid Scheme to represent Mr Mulkerrins. She remanded him in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday.
