A man has been remanded in custody for psychiatric assessment after he was charged with arson in connection with a fire at a historic church in Dublin.

Smoke and water damage were caused to the 19th- century St Catherine’s Church at Meath Street, after a fire broke out Monday evening. Firefighters took two hours to bring the blaze under control.

Patrick Currie (48) was arrested at Meath Street on Monday evening and was held at Kevin Street Garda station. He appeared at Dublin District Court yesterday charged with arson.

Defence solicitor Michael O’Connor told Judge Timothy Lucey that a psychiatric assessment of his client was “urgently required”.
