A man has been arrested following a five-and-a-half hour seige on a cargo ship off the coast of Scotland

A man has been arrested following a five-and-a-half hour seige on a cargo ship off the coast of Scotland. The 44-year-old Ukrainian was arrested following a disturbance on the Dutch-registered, Est.

The general cargo ship was two miles from the shore of the Cromarty Firth in the Highlands at the time.

The man had been on board the vessel with four other men, three Filipinos and a Dutch captain. They jumped off the vessel into the sea during the incident.

A police spokesman said: "The fifth and final crew member was successfully taken off the vessel by trained negotiators.

"It has brought this incident to a successful conclusion with no loss of life."

The Ukrainian, who has not been named, was arrested and taken to shore at around 1.40pm.

Three of the crew, who jumped from the ship, were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

One of the men was being treated for serious injuries, police said.

Area commander David O'Connor said: "I am pleased that the incident has come to a successful conclusion following police negotiations.

"A full police investigation is now under way to establish what happened on the vessel and how those now in hospital came by their injuries"

A fire is understood to have broken out on board the 64-metre long vessel.

Chief Inspector John MacDonald said the fire on board the ship appeared to be contained.

He said the police were liaising with the fire brigade.
