A MAN smuggled into Rosslare Harbour last weekend told gardaí that he cut his way out of the side of a lorry. He was found in a “dishevelled” state as he walked from the port.
The Afghan man, Farhad Atta Mohammad (20), appeared before Judge Donnchadh Ó Buachalla at Wexford District Court on Monday having been picked up at Ashfield Cross, Ballybrennan, Killinick, on the road out of Rosslare Harbour, by Garda Peter O’Cassin on Saturday last.
Garda O’Cassin told the court he was not sure if Mr Mohammad came into Rosslare from the UK or France. He was carrying £470 and over €200.
The court heard Mr Mohammad wished to claim asylum. Garda O’Cassin told him he would have to do that at the port, which he had left, or with the Refugee Applications Commissioner (RAC) in Dublin.
The court heard he had been co-operative and was staying in HSE accommodation. Sharon Cooney, for Mr Mohammad, said he was smuggled into the country and he intends to go to the RAC and make his application. She said he had no family or friends here.
Mr Mohammad, who is charged with failing to produce a valid passport or other equivalent document to establish either his identity or nationality, was remanded on continuing bail to appear again on November 3rd to allow him make his asylum application.
