A man is due in court in Co Westmeath tomorrow charged in connection with a murder in 1987.
The man (46) was arrested at Dublin airport this evening following an investigation by local gardaí and detectives from the Serious Crime Review Team into the murder of Brian McGrath (43).
The suspect was taken to Mullingar Garda station. He is due to appear in court in Athlone tomorrow morning.
The last confirmed sighting of Mr McGrath, from Coole, near Castlepollard, was in March 1987.
Gardaí were only made aware of his disappearance when a family member approached them in 1993.
The follow-up investigation resulted in a Garda search team uncovering unidentified human remains in the overgrown garden attached to the cottage that had been the McGrath family home.
Detectives believed the body had been set alight before it was secretly buried.
An investigation was carried out at the time, and a file was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions, but no prosecutions were taken.
Last May, gardaí exhumed a body from Whitehall Cemeteryin Co Westmeath and also carried out a forensic examination of Mr McGrath’s former home. The area was sealed off and specialist equipment used to search the soil.
