One man was killed and another was injured in an explosion in a mine in Co Tipperary.
The blast happened at Lisheen Mine at about 6.30pm yesterday.
The victim was named locally as Joe Fallon, who was in his 40s. He is originally from the nearby village of Two Mile Borris but was living in Callan, Co Kilkenny.
His injured colleague, who is in his 50s, was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
A Garda spokesman said it is understood there was an explosion in an underground shaft.
The area has been sealed off for a technical examination and the Health and Safety Authority is also investigating.
Lisheen Mine is located between the villages of Moyne and Templetuohy and is one of the largest producers of zinc concentrates in Europe.
Now in its second decade of operations, it employs about 370 people.
