Shots were fired from a firearm after a garda on a mountain bike confronted two men making an escape after carrying out an armed robbery in Dublin last night.
The incident occurred in Portmarnock at about 5.30pm after the two men entered a financial institution.
The pair threatened staff before leaving with a sum of cash.
On leaving the premises the men were confronted by a garda on bike patrol in the area. A number of shots were fired before the men hijacked a car and fled the scene. The garda was uninjured.
During a follow-up search a short time later in the Belmayne area, gardaí recovered a car along with a quantity of cash and a handgun and arrested a man in his 20s.
The man is detained under section 30 of the Offences against the State Act 1939 at Coolock Garda station.
Separately, four viable explosive devices were recovered and made safe by the Army bomb disposal team last night.
The devices were found by gardaí after stopping a stolen car in Harold’s Cross, Co Dublin, at 7pm.
