A Spanish man who suffered crush injuries when an elephant toppled on him remained in a serious condition in hospital yesterday.

Justino Munez, who suffered broken ribs and swelling of the chest, was placed into an induced coma at Cork University Hospital.

The incident happened at about 5.30pm on Saturday at Courtney Brothers Circus. Baby, the 40-year-old 2½ tonne elephant that went walkabout last week in a Cork car park, fell on top of Mr Munez after she was jostled by another elephant.

“The news was a little more positive today as they were expecting to take him off the ventilator as the swelling has eased a little on his chest. He’s not out of the woods yet but at least the news is a little more positive,” general manager Jim Conway said.
