Gardaí are continuing to question three people in connection with a gangland shooting in Limerick last night that left a 20-year-old man fighting for his life

The man was shot in the head as he sat in a car which was parked at St John’s Square near the city centre. A number of other people who were also in the car escaped injury.

The shooting happened shortly after 9.30pm and the victim was immediately rushed to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle by the driver of the car. He was later transferred to Cork University Hospital where he is in a critical condition.

The man, who is from the Ballinacurra Weston area of Limerick, is a known associate of one the city’s feuding gangs although it is not known at this stage if the shooting was feud-related.

The scene of the shooting was sealed off overnight pending forensic examinations and gardaí at Henry Street station have launched a full scale investigation.

Members of the Garda Technical Bureau are expected in Limerick later today to assist in the investigation.

Two men and a woman were arrested within an hour of last night’s shooting. All three are aged in their 20s and are being detained at Roxboro and Henry Street Garda stations under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act. They can be held without charge for up to seven days.
