A man has been charged with the 2006 murder of 14 year-old Sligo girl Melissa Mahon.
Ronnie McManus (43) also known as Ronnie Dunbar of 63 Rathbraughan Park in Sligo appeared before Sligo District Court shortly after 8.30pm this evening.
When charged with the murder of Melissa Mahon, Mr McManus replied "nothing to say". Judge Oliver McGuinnes remanded McManus in custody and granted an application for free legal aid.
A large crowd gathered at the courthouse and verbally abused Mr McManus as he entered the building.
Melissa Mahon from Rathbraughan Park in Sligo town, went missing on September 13th, 2006. She was last seen at an address in the town where she was staying.
In February, gardaí, acting on information received from a girl who is now in the care of the State, recovered the body of a girl from Lough Gill.
State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy conducted a postmortem in Dublin on the body, which was taken from waters near Parkes Castle, two kilometres from Sligo and samples were sent to the UK for testing. It is understood those tests have confirmed the remains are those of the missing schoolgirl.
