A 33-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of his father.
John Biggins, whose address was given as Ballynalty, Cross, Co Mayo, appeared before Judge Denis McLoughlin at the monthly sitting of Ballina District Court.
The accused is charged with the murder of his 71-year-old father, Tom Biggins, at Wallpark, Glencorrib, Shrule, last Sunday, May 6th.
Det Sgt James Carroll gave evidence of arresting Mr Biggins on Monday night at Mount Street, Claremorris, before conveying him to the local Garda station.
He said he charged Mr Biggins at 10.21pm. After caution, the accused had replied: “I have nothing to say.”
Seán Foy, solicitor, applied for medical attention for the accused while in prison.
Judge McLoughlin said he was aware the accused had received continuous medical care in hospital over a number of years both as an inpatient and outpatient.
Garda Insp Joe Doherty said his application was to have the accused remanded in custody to Harristown Court (Castlerea Prison) on Friday next, May 11th, at 10.30am.
The judge granted the application.
