A South Tipperary man was charged today at a sitting of Clonmel District Court with the attempted murder of a 10-year-old-girl.
The 18 year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with attempting to murder the girl at a field on the edge of Clonmel on the afternoon of Saturday November 10th last.
The accused was previously before the courts in relation to the same alleged incident. He is facing charges of attempted sexual assault, assault causing harm and false imprisonment of the girl.
Following a direction from the Director of Public Prosecutions the man has been charged with trying to kill the girl. An application by the DPP, made by Supt Dick Burke, to have the charge of false imprisonment amended to intentional false imprisonment was granted by Judge Riordan.
Garda Una Cunningham said that the accused made no reply when the charge of attempted murder was put to him at Clonmel Garda Station.
The accused, dressed in a black jacket and dark jeans, showed no sign of emotion during the proceedings.
Judge David Riordan remanded the man in custody to Tipperary District Court at 12 noon on Thursday December 27th.
