A Limerick man appeared in court in connection with the seizure of drugs with an estimated street value of £1.8 million. Members of the Garda National Drugs Unit, Dublin, backed by the Limerick drug Squad, made the discovery at an apartment in the city centre on Friday evening.

Mr Patrick Scanlan (39), Davis Street, Limerick, was charged before a special sitting of Limerick District Court on Saturday night with possession of cannabis resin for the purpose of sale or supply on June 25th at Mount Kenneth Place in contravention of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977. He was also charged with being unlawfully in possession of cannabis resin on the same occasion.

A solicitor, Mr Ted McCarthy, told Judge Tom O'Donnell that Mr Scanlan was unemployed and was said to be close to being destitute. Mr McCarthy said he would be applying for bail on Wednesday.

Mr Scanlan was remanded in custody until then.
