A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a double stabbing incident in a town in Co Limerick.

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with a double stabbing incident in a town in Co Limerick.

Two men in their 30s suffered serious knife wounds to their faces in an assault in Newcastle West over the August bank holiday weekend.

Stephen Daly (23), of Sharwood Estate, Newcastle West, appeared before Limerick District Court yesterday charged in connection with the incident. He is charged with assaulting Tim Lynch and David O’Connor, causing them harm, at Maiden Street on August 6th last, contrary to section 3 of the Offences Against the Person Act.

The accused is also charged with possession of a knife on the same date contrary to section 9 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act.

Garda David Gee gave evidence of arresting Mr Daly at Churchtown, Newcastle West, on August 6th last.

Garda Gee said he formally charged the accused on August 7th last and said he made no reply to any of the three charges.

Solicitor Michael O’Donnell was assigned to represented the accused, who was granted free legal aid.

Mr O’Donnell said he was not seeking to make a bail application yesterday.

Judge John O’Neill remanded Mr Daly in custody until August 15th when he is due to appear before the court again.
