A car salesman has appeared in court charged in connection with an incident in which gardaí were allegedly threatened with a handgun as they broke up a row outside a Co Donegal pub.

John Moran (52), with an address at Serpentine Avenue, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, appeared at Donegal District Court today charged with possession of a gun and ammunition at Gleneely, near Carndonagh, Co Donegal, on Monday.

He is accused of illegally having a revolver and three rounds of .22 ammunition.

The court heard that there was an altercation between locals and a number of people from Northern Ireland in the Orchard Bar, Gleneely.

Mr Moran, who owns his own business, told the court he has a family holiday home at Carndonagh. He rejected a prosecution claim that he should be remanded in custody pending his trial.

Det Inspector Kevin English told the court that he objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charges, the likelihood additional charges would be made and the fact Mr Moran lives outside the jurisdiction.

Mr Moran, who denies the charges, told Judge Kevin Kilrane the episode stemmed back to a year ago when he gave evidence for the prosecution in a Donegal court.

Judge Kilrane fixed bail at €15,000 cash to be put up by Mr Moran and an independent surety of €10,000.

He remanded the case to Buncrana District Court tomorrow. The judge made a condition that Mr Moran must stay away from the Orchard Bar and report twice a week to gardaí.
