A man (37) has appeared in Belfast Magistrates’ Court this morning in relation to the murder of a taxi driver in north Belfast 12 years ago.

The man had been arrested by detectives from the PSNI’s Historical Inquiries Team for questioning about the killing of John Harbinson (39), who was handcuffed and kicked to death by a UVF gang in the Mount Vernon estate in 1997.

Last month leading loyalist Mark Haddock was charged with Mr Harbinson’s murder.

The case is one of a number of killings linked to the notorious Mount Vernon UVF unit that are being re-examined in the wake of a Police Ombudsman’s investigation into alleged security force collusion with the paramilitary gang.
