A DUBLIN man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with assault in connection with a fatal stabbing of a father of one child last week.
Gerard Burnett (28) was seriously injured outside his house at Castlecurragh Vale, Mulhuddart, northwest Dublin, just before midnight on August 21st.
Mr Burnett’s partner fled with the couple’s three-year-old son from the house as the attack began.
Mr Burnett, who was living at the house with his partner and son, was taken to Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown.
He was pronounced dead just before 1am the following day.
Andrew Gibney (20), Dromheath Avenue, Mulhuddart, was brought before Dublin District Court and charged with assault causing serious harm to Mr Burnett.
Det Garda Sgt Michael Kennedy told Judge Denis McLoughlin that Mr Gibney was arrested at 10.20pm on Wednesday and that he replied “no, nothing” after he was charged and cautioned.
Defence solicitor Anthony Hughes said there was no application for bail.
Judge McLoughlin remanded Mr Gibney in custody to appear again at Cloverhill District Court next Thursday.
The court heard that he was unemployed, on social welfare and was seeking free legal aid.
Judge McLoughlin said that he would grant legal aid to Mr Gibney subject to a statement of his means being furnished to the court.
