Man charged after crime crackdown in Derry

A man was today charged in connection with a robbery plot after police mounted a crackdown on serious crime in Derry.

A man was today charged in connection with a robbery plot after police mounted a crackdown on serious crime in Derry.

The man was one of four arrested after officers swooped on suspects they believed to be armed on Friday night.

Police said two men were arrested and an imitation handgun was seized in an operation in the Glenshane Road area.

During follow-up searches in Derry another two men were taken for questioning.

Police today confirmed that a 22-year-old man has been charged with possession of an imitation firearm to commit robbery. He will appear at Derry Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

The three others have been released while police carry out further inquiries.

The Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman Nuala O'Loan has also launched an investigation after being informed that police fired shots during the operation.
