A man was being detained by gardaí tonight after the body of a woman in her 40s was discovered earlier today at a house on Shelmalier Road in the East Wall area of Dublin.
The victim, 43-year-old Joan Vickers, was stabbed several times in the throat during the attack at a house in East Wall, north Dublin.
The discovery was made shortly after 5am. She was pronounced dead at the Mater Hospital an hour later and her body was removed to the City Morgue.
Gardaí arrested a man earlier this afternoon and are holding him under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He can be held for up to 24 hours without charge.
The house has been sealed off for forensic examination and the State Pathologist has been informed. Gardaí are carrying out house-to-house inquiries in the area.
The end-terrace house on Shelmalier Road is opposite where Aidan O'Kane, a mechanic and father of one, was shot dead in December last year. Locals described the dead woman as quiet and well-liked. She grew up in the area.
The dead woman was married with four children, three of whom lived in the house. The woman's elderly father also lived in the house. It is understood the two youngest children were staying with friends at the time of the incident.
A neighbour who did not wish to be named said she was shocked at the woman's death.
"It's just terrible. I can't believe it. Only last year we had the Aidan O'Kane murder on this road. I've been living here all my life and I've never seen anything like the events of this past year."
"I didn't know her well, just knew her to say hello to. They were a nice family," she said
