A man found dead between the rail lines at Howth DART station last October had been electrocuted, Dublin City Coroner's Court heard yesterday.

Mr Martin Gough (41), of Kilbarrack Road, Raheny, was naked except for a pair of boots and socks when he was found at the station shortly after 6 a.m. on October 22nd.

The Deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Therese Cassidy, said death was due to electrocution. There was no evidence of direct contact with the 1,500-volt overhead line which powers the trains and the extensive burns to the body indicated the electricity had arced across from the power line to Mr Gough. He would have been killed instantly.

Mr Gough had been seen near the station about 12.30 a.m. and had been drinking earlier in Howth. A security man at Howth Yacht Club heard screams about 1.30 a.m. from the direction of the station.

Sgt Martin Drew, of Raheny Garda station, said scuff marks were found on the wall which might indicate that Mr Gough had climbed on to the roof over the platform.

The jury returned an open verdict and recommended that Iarnrod Eireann review security at the DART station.
