A man was convicted at Swords District Court yesterday of assaulting his 18 year old daughter.

Michael Fleming (45), of Castle Grove, Swords, Co Dublin, claimed his daughter was involved with a drug addict, and when he hit her last October "there was no malice in it. I was only trying to put a small bit of sense into her".

He had pleaded not guilty to four charges of assault. But witnesses gave evidence of seeing him hitting her across the face, and hitting her with the receiver of a public telephone.

Judge Sean Delap convicted him on two of the assaults and remanded Fleming to April 30th for probation reports.
