An alleged murderer, Nicolay Soltys, who is accused of brutally murdering six members of his family on August 20th, was arrested yesterday by police in Sacramento.

Mr Soltys ( 27), a Ukranian immigrant, was taken into custody without a struggle at his mother's house after a nationwide hunt, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.

"We have arrested the suspect. We will be holding a news conference shortly," said a Sheriff's Department spokeswoman.

Mr Soltys had been placed on the FBI's "10 Most Wanted List" after his alleged rampage.

He is accused of killing his pregnant wife, Lyubov (22), their three-year-old son, Sergey, his aunt and uncle and their two grandchildren.

Mr Soltys was turned in by a family member, Sheriff Lou Blanas told a local television station.

"It was his brother," Mr Blanas told KCRA television. "Some of the family were terrified of him. We knew that from the brother."

"Nicolay was hiding under a desk in the rear yard," he said, and police ordered him out at gunpoint and arrested him.

Fears that he may have been helped by members of the Russian and Ukrainian communities appear to have been unfounded, he added.

"By his physical appearance he looked like he'd been living in a field," Mr Blanas said.

The murderous rampage 12 days ago rocked the area, especially the large Slavic community.

On Sunday, over 5,000 people attended an emotional memorial service at the Bethany Slavic Missionary Church in the outskirts of Sacramento.

"We have experienced disturbing days of intense sorrow and there is no easy answer to this," Pastor Adam Bordaruk told mourners at the bilingual service.

The first victim was Mr Soltys's wife, who was stabbed to death in a Sacramento suburb. Their three-year-old son, Sergey, was stabbed and his body left in a box in a trash-filled creek bed later that night.

Police allege that in between those murders, Mr Soltys drove to the home of his aunt and uncle, Ms Galina Kukharskaya and Mr Petr Kukharskiy, and killed them along with their grandchildren, nine-year-old Tatiana Kukharskaya, and Dimitriy Kukharskiy, (10).
