A man who sexually abused his nieces and a nephew has been jailed for seven years by Judge Cyril Kelly at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He refused to suspend any portion of the sentence.
The 39-year-old married man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also the godfather of one of his victims. They said they made no protests because they liked him and because of the family relationship. He pleaded guilty to six sample charges of indecent assaults on the victims on dates from January 1st, 1986 to April 5th, 1992. There were more than 50 charges on the indictment against him. He had no previous convictions.
Dr Patrick Randals of the Granada Institute told Mr Hugh Hartnett SC, defending, the defendant began treatment in January. He had been sexually abused from the age of four for six years by his brother, his brother's friends and by two teachers.
