AN 80-year-old man was remanded in custody ate Skibbereen District Court yesterday on a charge of murdering his wife. Mr Michael O'Regan, with an address in Castle Street, Dunmanway, Co Cork, clutched rosary beads during the short hearing before Judge Brendan Wallace.

He was charged with murdering Mrs Helen O'Regan (73), at her home on Coole Mountain, Dunmanway, last May 26th. Sgt Gerry Cronin said in reply to the charge Mr O'Regan said: "Not guilty".

Mr Alex Gibbons, solicitor, said his client was an elderly man living in the district for ,many years and he would prefer not to be remanded in custody.

The judge said his hands were tied in the matter and an application for bail would have "to be made to the High Court. He remanded Mr O'Regan in custody to appear before Clonakilty District Court next Tuesday.
