It appears that an incident developed and that Mr McCarthy stumbled, hitting his head.

He was taken by ambulance to the South Infirmary Hospital in the city where he later died.

No one has been arrested in connection with the death.

In a second incident in Cork over the holiday weekend, Mr John Harrington (58) died when he went surfing at Owenahincha at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Mr Harrington, of Ashdene, South Douglas Road, Cork, was watched by holidaymakers as he went into the water in one of the most popular bathing areas in west Cork.

Shortly afterwards, he was seen to be in difficulty and the alarm was raised. Three lifeguards rushed to help and attempted to revive him on the beach. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival at Mount Carmel Hospital in nearby Clonakilty.

A post mortem was carried out yesterday as Mr Harrington's widow, Lilly, his two sons, Bryan and Thomas, and his daughter, Joan, were staying with relatives.

Warnings about deadly under currents at Owenahincha beach are issued every summer in response to a series of drownings.

A third tragedy in the Munster area involved 21 year old Karen Fogarty of Gortagullane, Muckross, Killarney, a champion rower.

She had seen her boyfriend home when her bicycle was hit by a car at 12.30 a.m. on Sunday. The accident occurred on the well lit Killarney to Muckross Road and the impact was heard by the dead woman's boyfriend, Mr Gerard O'Donoghue, who had turned to go into his home on the Muckross Road when he became aware that something had happened.

The couple had walked from Killarney town centre to Mr O'Donoghue's home where she collected her bicycle.

It is understood that the impact was from behind and that a car involved was later found in a field not far from the scene of the accident.
