A TOTAL of 32 additional charges of sexual assault and rape of minors have been brought against a man already charged with sexual offences against two girls in Galway, a court was told yesterday.
The 60 year old defendant, arrested in September, was previously charged with raping a girl and sexually assaulting her last August. He had also been charged with raping the same girl between April 1st, 1995, and January 31st last, and with sexually assaulting another girl on a date unknown.
At a previous sitting, Galway District Court heard that the defendant was retired and receiving a disability pension from the US of $1,100 a month.
At yesterday's sitting, Sgt Sean O'Grady said a further 32 charges had been brought. A book of evidence was being prepared.
The additional charges included rape and sexual assault of one girl and rape and sexual assault of two boys. The court heard that in relation to the first girl, the accused faced a total of 12 counts of rape and 11 counts of sexual assault on dates between May 1994, and August 1996. In relation to one of the boys, the accused faced new charges of five counts of rape and sexual assault.
Judge John Garavan remanded the defendant in custody until a court sitting on December 16th.
