An investigation has opened after the death of a man in Garda custody.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission said Hugh Brien (52), from Orchardstown Drive, Rathfarnham, Co Dublin was arrested in central Dublin last night at about 8.20pm under public order legislation.
He was taken to Store Street Garda station where he was placed in a cell. At about 1.30am, Mr Brien was found to be unresponsive.
The commission said resuscitation was attempted and Mr Brien was then transferred to the Mater hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2.30am.
The matter was referred to GSOC by the Garda Commissioner in accordance with section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act 2005.
This section provides that the Garda Commissioner shall refer any matter that appears to him to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.
