A 19-year-old man is in a critical condition in hospital following an assault in Mullingar last night.
Gardai said the man was set upon and assaulted by a number of youths at Ginnell Terrace in the town at approximately 6.45pm.
The man was taken by ambulance to Mullingar Hospital but was later transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where his condition is described as critical.
There have been no arrests to date and enquiries are ongoing. Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them at Mullingar Garda Station.
