A YOUNG man has been charged with the murder of a Congo war veteran who was found dead at his home in Limerick city earlier this month.
Christopher McNamara (18), Good Shepherd Villas, Pennywell, Limerick, is charged with the murder of James Boyce (72) on March 6th or March 7th last at St Munchin’s Street, St Mary’s Park, Limerick.
Mr Boyce, who served with distinction as part of the UN forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1961, was found in the bedroom of his home on March 7th last.
Det Garda Mark Deasy gave evidence at Limerick District Court yesterday of arresting and formally charging Mr McNamara at Mayorstone Garda station at 3.07pm.
The court heard the teenager made no reply to the charge.
Solicitor Ted McCarthy was assigned to represent Mr McNamara who, he said, was unemployed.
Judge Tom O’Donnell said that given the nature of the charge, bail was a question for the High Court and not an issue for his court.
Garda Insp Gerry Horan requested that Mr McNamara be remanded in custody until next week.
Judge O’Donnell remanded him in custody until March 30th, when he is due to appear before Limerick District Court via video link at 10am.
