"They don't give us any information. Once we get the information we will investigate," Mr Mahathir told reporters.

Nevada state officials confirmed on Saturday an envelope sent to the Microsoft office in Reno from Malaysia had anthrax bacteria present after three rounds of tests.

Mr Mahathir and Foreign Minister Mr Syed Hamid Albar cautioned against jumping to conclusions that the anthrax cells were placed in the envelope in Malaysia.

"We are not a country that produces anthrax," the foreign minister told a news conference after meeting US Trade Representative, Mr Robert Zoellick.

Mr Zoellick said the US would work with Malaysia and other countries to pin down the anthrax problem, which has so far affected three US states.

Police in Kuala Lumpur said Washington had so far made no request for help or given details about the letter, which was originally posted from the United States to a Microsoft vendor in Malaysia, and returned with pornographic magazine pages contaminated with anthrax.

Deputy Police Chief Mohd Jamil Johari said the letter had been sent back to the US because the Malaysian address could not be traced, Bernama news agency reported.
