Main points of the pay deal:

Over half of the 20,000 staff nurses to receive extra allowances based on qualifications and special areas of responsibility worth between £1,000 and £1,500 a year.

Nearly 3,000 ward sisters and nurse managers to receive increases of 10 per cent, bringing the top of the director of nursing scale to £40,907 and top of the ward sister scale to £27,522. New middle management grade to be created with a maximum of £28,710.

Three days extra annual leave days for staff nurses and four days extra annual leave days for ward sisters and nurse managers.

New management structures which will reduce the autonomy of some matrons and directors of nursing. They will report to general managers in health services, rather than chief executives and programme managers.
