A drug-dealer serving 10 years has been given another three-year sentence by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for attacking a detective with a machete.

Terence Russell's assault on Det Garda James Donegan caused the officer to have surgery and to be off work for nine weeks.

The offence happened early in the morning, after patrolling gardai in plain clothes intervened when they came on Russell and his accomplice, William O'Keeffe, assaulting two other men in the Ranelagh area.

Russell was also later treated in hospital for a head-wound caused when struck in self-defence by Det Garda Donegan.
